Save Your Soul
The Southern Fold
A deep-fried serving of southern-gothic soul comes courtesy of Kilkenny/Dublin -based alt-blues rockers The Southern Fold. Taken from their new album Bible Fear—soaked in smooth, plaintive harmonies and finger-lickin’, plugged-in country-fried picking—Save Your Soul is this week’s Scum Gentry Radio Song of the Week… Check it out:
Formed by Kilkenny native Emlyn Holden in 2014, and joined by Dubliner Laura Hand as co-vocalist the following year, The Southern Fold began gigging in earnest mainly in the Leinster area performing a number of self penned songs in the alt folk & country/blues vein.
Their debut EP, ‘A True Ascension from the Wayward Path’, was released in 2016, with Frieda Freytag (Fox Owl Crow, Dave Couse) on cello and piano, Joe Maher (The Mariannes) on guitar, and Rob Campbell (Pine the Pilcrow) on cello and bass.
The band have gigged all around the country over the past few years with stops in Dublin’s Whelan’s, Workmans Club, The Ruby Sessions; Cleere’s & the Set Theatre (with The Riptide Movement), Kilkenny; and Kenny’s, Lahinch to name just a few.
Other dates include a couple of YouBloom gigs (Dublin’s Phoenix Park & the Mercantile), a slot at Vantastival; BARE Festival; Townlands Carnival. They also made it through to the final of the Nova Discovered competition in June 2018.
2019 has seen them support Micah P. Hinson in Whelan’s, Dublin, play the legendary BAG (Ballymore Acoustic Gigs) and Kilkenny Arts Festival plus their first UK gig at the Red Rooster Festival.
A successful Fundit campaign during the Autumn of ’18 allowed the band (with new expanded lineup) to get back to the studio and record a full length album entitled ‘Bible Fear’. The first single from this album, ‘Save Your Soul’, was released on 8th October 2019 followed by the album on Hallowe’en 31st October 2019. The band will play their album launch in Cleere’s Theatre, Kilkenny on Friday 22nd November.
“Sounding a lot like something Australia’s roots musician Bill Jackson might have written… This is pretty much as good as anything America can come up with… well worth hearing.”
– Frank Gutch Jr. – No Depression
“With some deft touches in songwriting and arrangements, the Southern Fold are a new prospect on the alt‐folk scene here. Ones to keep an eye on.”
