A Day in Daniel's Life - Flash Fiction by Aurora Coppola

Andrew actually went to pay the psychologist a visit—believe it or not—but that was because they tricked him. They drugged him good, the babooshka did it to him (that would be what he defined as an old Russian farmer, not his mother, really)! She saw some strange cuts on his arm which were evenly spread from his wrist down to his elbow, that’s the way he was caught and done for it, alright! She doped him, the weirdo!

The self-claimed specialist prescribed around a pound of tablets for his dysthymia (Andrew didn’t know yet but he would have to take that crap for the rest of his poxy life, because they said he would never recover from it).

They said he suffered from “reactive depression”, now that would be “a mental state of altered mood characterized by feelings of sadness, despair, and discouragement; distinguished from grief, which is realistic and proportionate to a personal loss. Profound depression may be an illness itself”. The cause of this—they said—could be due to a shock caused by a big loss:

Checked! A failure: tick that! A bad relationship: spot on! A violence: that too! He had them all, the poor bastard... plus a bottle of vodka a day. Ah! 😧
